Christchurch Trade Day
– 6 April 2017

Even though she wasn’t invited, Cyclone Debbie decided to drop in on South Island Trade Day on 6 April at the Event Centre in Lincoln, a few kms out of Christchurch.

It rained steadily all the previous night and at times during Trade Day the raindrops were horizontal as gale-force winds whipped across the venue.

Inside, however, all was warm and bright. Within the space of a few hours the empty netball stadium was transformed into a riot of colour as nurseries and hort supply companies rolled in their plants and products and set up for  the expected influx of visitors.

In all there were 50 stands, just a couple short of the maximum the venue could accommodate

Myrtle rust found on Raoul Island

The announcement by MPI in early April that myrtle rust had been found on pohutukawa trees on Raoul Island, 1000km northeast of New Zealand, is a reminder to the nursery trade not to be complacent about this potential menace.

The rust is a fungal infection that attacks a wide range of plants in the myrtle family and if it were to enter mainland New Zealand could attack pohutukawa, kanuka, manuka, rata and many other natives, as well as commercially-grown species such as eucalyptus, guava and feijoa.

Because wind-blown spores of the rust can be carried over great distances, many believe it is inevitable myrtle rust will at some point reach New Zealand and when it does, the nursery industry will be one of those most seriously affected.

There are things that can be done, however, to mitigate what might happen and we outlined many of these in the February/March issue of Comm Hort last year.

Click here CHFebMar16 to access that issue. The myrtle rust story begins on page 26.

There was also further background on the problem in the Dec15/Jan 16 issue. Click here CHDec15Jan16 for that. Again it’s on page 26.
